旅路

神の導きに従って、1976年の八月、ノース・キャロライナ州にある Sisters of Mercy の修道会に入会した。修道者としての生活を送りながら、その修道会の本部がある敷地内の大学で、色々な経験をするようにと、英語や聖書の勉強をするかたわら、美術の勉強をする機会をあたえられた。

1985年の十月、ある教師の父親が突然の死で亡くなったことがそもそもの動機となりこの一連の作品集の最初の作となった「旅路」を手がけることになっ た。

自分の人生を改めて振り返って見るとき、私は神の家へ向かって歩み続ける旅人の一人だという実感に満たされる。人との出合い、人間関係の荒波にもまれ、日々の生活を通して成長する自分。世の中には、グレーの部分もあるのだということを見極めながら、人としての優しさと柔軟さを身につけていく自分にも気づきつつあった。この世の旅人であるかぎり、一とき一ときを大切に生き、成長を続ける人間であるよう心がけたいものだ。

Journey

After some struggles with different situations, and because of them, I was led to come to know about the Sisters of Mercy of N. C. After eight months of association with the Sisters, I joined the community. In the course of my life as a Sister of Mercy, I was given the opportunity to study for degree in visual art, among other things.

During that time of study, in October of 1985, one of my art instructor's father died suddenly because of a heart attack. This piece of work was the result of that experience. It made me to reflect on my life and my attitude toward death. And this was the first of my series of work that dealt with my life story.

At that time, I saw myself as a person who used to be very straight forward, and did not know how to be flexible. Then I saw myself learning that there is some grayness in life. We cannot think of everything in terms of black and white. I recognized myself learning to bend and becoming gentler with self and with others. I saw my life is a journey. And I saw myself as a person on a runway toward God.
